The Literacy Caste System

It exists. It always has, and it probably always will. As a result, those who command the English language command their environment and their destiny. Those who can’t wield the word resort—knowingly, or not—to the sword. And we all know how useful swords are in the art of persuasion in this day and time.

“But we live in an age of IM, texting, and Twitter,” you say. “Who cares about capital letters, punctuation, grammar, and syntax?” We say, even if those around you don’t care about the subliminal messages that accompany careless writing, it would be wise to remember that myriad others will notice and care: clients, potential clients, potential mates, college admissions boards, employers, and people-who-screwed-you-and from-whom you-seek-reparation. Know, too, that some of the people who react negatively can’t necessarily identify the exact linguistic gaffes. They just know, in the back of their minds, that something’s “off” about your communication.

Language is an art and a skill, and just because we all speak and write doesn’t mean we do them well, or even adequately. Imagine being a gifted athlete or musician and thinking you don’t still have to practice and rehearse before you can advance to the World Series or appear on the World Stage.
